USPS: HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES
HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES. The federal government has increased the threat level from Yellow or “elevated” to Orange or “high risk” for all mass transit systems — including regional and intercity passenger rail, subway and metropolitan bus systems in the United States. This is being done out of an abundance of caution following yesterday’s bombings in London.
As a result of the increased risk level, USPS employees have been asked to increase their attention to security of the mail, postal facilities and vehicles and to exercise caution in performance of their duties. This includes taking extra care when accepting mail at the counter and exercising caution when collecting and delivering mail. Carriers and other employees are asked to report immediately any suspicious mail items to Postal Inspectors and local law enforcement officials.
UPS: London Service Update
Deliveries to and collections from certain postcode areas in London remain suspended as a result of street closures arising from the terrorist attacks on July 7th. These postcodes include: EC2, EC3, NW1, W2, WC1. UPS volume collected in London on July 7th departed as scheduled. Normal services are expected to resume on Monday 11th July subject to any remaining restrictions imposed by the authorities. Customers can call UPS for service details or track their shipments via ups.com for scanning updates.
MAIL DELAYS EXPECTED THROUGHOUT ENGLAND
USPS: Hybrid electric vehicle being tested
Hybrid electric vehicle being tested
Waltham Vehicle Maintenance Facility in Boston, MA, is home to a new hybrid electric two-ton vehicle being tested for one year by the Postal Service.
Fuel economy is expected to improve significantly while air pollution could be reduced up to 50% if electric hybrid vehicles like the one USPS is testing in Massachusetts were used.
The hybrid is on loan, at no cost to USPS, from Azure Dynamics, an electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturer, while the company works on converting USPS two-ton vehicles to parallel hybrid electric — a more advanced hybrid technology.
“We’re pursuing hybrid electric technology to address fuel cost and air pollution issues,” says Engineering VP Walter O’Tormey. USPS is currently operating 30 all-electric Azure vehicles in New York.
The loaned vehicle uses a battery and a small diesel engine for power, along with regenerative braking technology to charge the battery.
