Hurricane Katrina Update:
Hurricane Katrina has shown sustained winds of 160 mph, making it a category 5 storm. At 7 a.m. ET, the storm was around 250 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The hurricane center warned it could come ashore early Monday morning with a storm surge of up to 25 feet and douse the Gulf Coast with up to 15 inches of rain in some areas.
President Bush has declared a state of emergency for Louisiana. In New Orleans, residents have begun evacuation procedures. Storm preparations continue for Gulf Coast residents in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
South Florida District
All mail processing plants resumed operations and drop shipments Friday at 3 p.m.
All retail units in ZIP Codes 330, 331 and 332 normally open Saturdays are operational, but many sites are still without power. Generators have been deployed to those sites, but retail services will be limited.
Mail delivery is underway throughout the South Florida District.
All other Districts are fully operational at this time.

Hurricane Katrina Update:
As of 3 p.m. ET, Hurricane Katrina is out to sea and gaining strength with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. Forecasters are predicting the storm will head toward the Gulf Coast. Storm preparations are underway along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
Hurricane Katrina is expected to strengthen into a category 4 storm by the time it makes landfall.
South Florida District
All mail processing plants resumed operations and drop shipments Friday at 3 p.m.
All retail units in ZIP Codes 330, 331 and 332 normally open Saturdays are operational, but many sites are still without power. Generators have been deployed to those sites, but retail services will be limited.
Mail delivery is underway throughout the South Florida District.
All other Districts are fully operational at this time.

At 2:00 PM EDT the center of Hurricane Katrina — a Category 2 hurricane — was located about 60 miles west-northwest of Key West, FL, and moving away from Florida and the Keys with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. Forecasters are expecting the storm to gain strength as it moves into open water over the Gulf Coast.
South Florida District
All mail processing plants resumed operations today at 3 p.m. Drop shipments to plant facilities resumed at 3 p.m.
All retail and delivery offices in ZIP Codes 330, 331 and 332 are closed today and won’t re-open until tomorrow morning. Drop shipments to retail and delivery units in these ZIP Codes will resume tomorrow. Currently, 85% of the retail and delivery units are without power. There are major road closures, downed trees and flooding throughout the area.
There is no mail delivery today in the South Florida District. Delivery will resume tomorrow.

USPS: JULY FINANCIAL RESULTS
JULY FINANCIAL RESULTS. Revenues of $5.275 billion for July were in line with USPS forecasts, at 0.5% ($26 million) over plan and 3.1% ($170 million) less than July last year. Total mail volume was 1.4% less than July last year. Standard and Periodicals were greater than July 2004, while First-Class Mail and all other classes declined. Total mail volume is 4.5 billion pieces or 2.6% greater than the same period last year. First-Class Mail revenue is 1.3% below last year ($391 million) YTD. Standard Mail revenue is up 4.6% over last year ($684 million). Full results are posted at Financial & Operating Statements on usps.com.
