Indiana eBay’ers choose USPS

Greater Indiana District has held six Post Office eBay Day Events — reaching 800 customers with information and training on how quick, easy and convenient it is do their eBay shipping with USPS.

At sign-in tables, the district eBay Day team had usps.com information, including a NetPost Services display and Click-N-Ship and Carrier Pickup Online Notification handouts. More than 400 customers left business cards or registered to get future information on buying, selling and shipping.

Live demonstrations every half-hour walked customers through registering, selling and shipping via Express Mail and Priority Mail on eBay. There also was an eBay information table. The beauty of the eBay partnership is that customers have access to all of our online services — usps.com, Click-N-Ship and other postal products — without ever leaving the eBay site.

“Your instructions and good advice gave me the confidence that I needed,” a Carmel, IN, customer wrote to the team after she made her first eBay sale.

With success under their belts, team members plan to hold several more eBay Days throughout Greater Indiana.

"The combined dependability, high performance and modern technology this alliance brings allow us to better satisfy our current customers and to acquire new ones," Wade added.

Launched today, enhancements to the Postal Service's Global Express Mail provide day-certain guaranteed delivery to the Pacific Rim and United States - with the security and safety customers have come to expect from the U.S. Postal Service and without hidden surcharges.

Indiana also increases revenue with extended hours
Walk-in revenue for the Greater Indiana District increased by more than $400,000 when eight post offices in the Indianapolis Metro area started staying open until 7 p.m.

Retail Associate Pat Horton helps a customer at the New Augusta Station in Indianapolis.

Many customers said they would have gone to the competition if not for USPS’s extended hours and reduced wait-times — which may account for the word-of-mouth advertising generated by the move.

“The customer response to the later hours has been outstanding,” said Acting District Marketing Manager Mike McInturf. “They appreciate the flexibility.”

USPS delivers for fans and communities as Pottermania sweeps the country

POTTERPALOOZA
USPS delivers for fans and communities as Pottermania sweeps the country

Did you get anything done this weekend?

Let’s rephrase that — did you get anything done this weekend besides reading the latest adventure of Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts?

The Postal Service did. Letter carriers delivered more than 1 million copies of the best-selling novel to anxious fans — enough to increase package deliveries by 30% compared to an average Saturday.

It wasn’t just our record-breaking delivery efforts that highlighted the day. Across the country, employees participated in special events to mark the sixth installment of author J.K. Rowling’s series.

Orange and El Toro, CA, Post Office employees and the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1100 raised money to buy 25 copies of the book and donate them to Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Many Post Offices around the country teamed with their local libraries for Harry Potter activities like trivia and look-alike events. Other offices partnered with book stores to offer fans commemorative cancellations in their new books.

In Columbia, SC, Postmaster Dennis Moles, National Association of Letter Carriers President Ed Martin and Customer Relations Coordinator Debbie Breland were at the Red Cross — in Harry Potter costumes — to support the “Half-Blood Prince Blood Drive” Friday. Donors were given a voucher for a free copy of Half-Blood Prince in honor of the “Magic in the Mail” day promotion and NBC’s Today Show mentioned the blood drive Friday morning.

When it’s all said and done, Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince got a whole-hearted effort from the Postal Service!

Letter carriers on alert for squidgetty Harry Potter fans

OWLS THAT FOR safety?
Letter carriers on alert for squidgetty Harry Potter fans

Squidgetty. What else would you call the droves of young readers who will be squiggling on their front doorsteps and fidgeting by their windows tomorrow as they wait for delivery of the newest Harry Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?

Snowy white owls, like Harry’s Hedwig, are the preferred way of sending messages in the Harry Potter novels.

While readers might be anxiously awaiting their mail, letter carriers — as always — will be on the lookout for children approaching their vehicles. Because of the expected increase in foot traffic around delivery vehicles tomorrow, a standup talk has been issued to letter carriers reminding them to watch for children in front of, behind and on both sides of their delivery vehicles.

We can’t say for sure, but fans might see a carrier or two dressed as one their favorite characters. There could even be one or two dressed as Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore or even an owl — the preferred method of message delivery at Hogwarts — maybe even Harry Potter’s own owl, Hedwig!

Whether they’re in full uniform or taking a few liberties tomorrow, that safety message, “Watch for children around your vehicle,” is worth repeating.

USPS set to deliver more than 1 million Harry Potter books

This Saturday, more than one million readers are going to be extremely happy to see their letter carriers. That’s the day USPS is scheduled to deliver the newest Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble have a combined total of more than 1 million advance orders for author J.K. Rowling’s sixth installment in her popular series — and they’ve teamed with the Postal Service to deliver them on the first date of availability.

“We’re delighted to have a role in helping young people discover the joy of reading,” said USPS Chief Marketing Officer Anita Bizzotto. “Our employees will make sure that hundreds of thousands of excited fans can enjoy the new book on the day it is released.”

In much the same way students at Hogwarts turn to Professor Dumbledore for advice, USPS employees will receive a standup talk to help answer questions on how to handle this massive magical mailing. Top of the list? No deliveries before July 16. The standup talk also lists how to handle packages of the books received from UPS at destination delivery units, many of which will be receiving this type of shipment for the first time.

And while USPS may not have access to Harry’s magical powers, we’re sure that faster than you can say “Deliverus importantum,” our employees will do more than just muggle through — they’ll show customers we can work a little delivery magic of our own.

Post Offices clean up after storm

DISSIPATING DENNIS
Post Offices clean up after storm

Tropical Depression Dennis is dumping rain throughout the Ohio River Valley today as Florida, Alabama and Mississippi Post Offices clean up from the deluge Dennis brought their way.

Flooded by Hurricane Dennis, the St. Marks, FL, Post Office will be closed for repairs for four months.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that the Postal Service is working to make sure people in Pensacola and Wakulla County affected by the hurricane get their mail. One of the hardest hit offices was tiny St. Marks, FL, Post Office — flooded by the torrential downpours that accompanied Dennis.

It will take four months to repair the building, which housed only Post Office boxes and did not handle home delivery. Until St. Marks Post Office reopens, the 357 box holders can pick up their mail at the Woodville office.

Farther west in the Panhandle, many Post Offices are without power. Generators, fans and lights will be moved into the still-operable offices and service will continue. The Pensacola Post Office is open, but surrounding offices have limited retail. Because of the lack of power and the large number of employees that left the state to escape Dennis, carriers are delivering only 35% of the mail.

Home delivery today is expected to increase to 60% and be up to 100% in most places in Pensacola by Thursday.

USPS: Hurricane Dennis Overview

TRACKING DENNIS. Hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, tornadoes and flooding have left more than 500,000 Alabama and Florida homes without power. This after hurricane Dennis made landfall near Pensacola, FL, yesterday afternoon then headed inland toward Alabama. Officials say it may take up to three weeks to restore power. Florida, Alabama and Mississippi have been declared disaster areas.

Postal facilities in the storm’s path were closed Friday and then Saturday as the storm made its way past the Florida Keys and up the Gulf Coast. Offices in Pensacola and Panama City, FL, closed early Saturday in preparation for the hurricane.

In Alabama, all postal facilities in the Mobile service area closed and Montgomery P&DC suspended operations as evacuations and curfews were enforced. Both facilities are expected to be open today. In Mississippi, Gulfport P&DC remained open throughout the storm, but road closures limited access to the facility. Get service updates at usps.com.

UPS Expands Early Morning Delivery Zips by Thousands

UPS Expands Early Morning Delivery Zips by Thousands

ATLANTA, July 11, 2005 – UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced it has expanded its U.S. premium early morning delivery territory with more than 7,200 new ZIP codes. The move extends UPS's leadership for early morning delivery with service to some 19,200 ZIP codes across the country.

With these additions, more than 77 percent of the population can receive UPS Next Day Air® Early A.M.® deliveries up to two hours prior to regular guaranteed overnight service, or as early as 8:00 a.m. in some areas.

UPS was the first express carrier to offer this early morning product nearly 10 years ago. This guaranteed service provides an option for both urgent need shipments and daily early morning stock replenishment. Saturday service is also available to certain destinations.

"The strength of the UPS integrated network is our ability to tighten operations and flex our system to respond to changing customer needs," said Rick Campana, UPS marketing vice president. "Now, we can offer shippers an expanded early morning territory to reach more of their customers with this premium service."

The need for earlier UPS deliveries in outer metro areas has been fueled by technology, infrastructure growth and increasingly mobile workforces. Examples of when UPS Next Day Air Early A.M. makes a difference can vary from the medical center requesting an early shipment of different heart valves before morning surgery to the industrial equipment distributor who wants a part for a service technician to pick up enroute to a customer repair. Early morning premium shipments leverage time zone differences, so that signed licensing agreements can arrive in Silicon Valley prior to a morning teleconference with East Coast software developers.

Shipment to the expanded destinations for UPS Next Day Air Early A.M. can be processed on Web-based systems such as UPS Internet Shipping and UPS CampusShip™. Next week, more than 400,000 installed UPS WorldShip® proprietary systems will automatically add the new Zip code destinations, and UPS compatible systems will be available for upgrades. A complete listing of UPS Next Day Air Early A.M. Zip codes is available on UPS.com.

USPS: HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES

HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES. The federal government has increased the threat level from Yellow or “elevated” to Orange or “high risk” for all mass transit systems — including regional and intercity passenger rail, subway and metropolitan bus systems in the United States. This is being done out of an abundance of caution following yesterday’s bombings in London.

As a result of the increased risk level, USPS employees have been asked to increase their attention to security of the mail, postal facilities and vehicles and to exercise caution in performance of their duties. This includes taking extra care when accepting mail at the counter and exercising caution when collecting and delivering mail. Carriers and other employees are asked to report immediately any suspicious mail items to Postal Inspectors and local law enforcement officials.

USPS: Hybrid electric vehicle being tested

SOCKET TO ’EM
Hybrid electric vehicle being tested

Waltham Vehicle Maintenance Facility in Boston, MA, is home to a new hybrid electric two-ton vehicle being tested for one year by the Postal Service.

Fuel economy is expected to improve significantly while air pollution could be reduced up to 50% if electric hybrid vehicles like the one USPS is testing in Massachusetts were used.

The hybrid is on loan, at no cost to USPS, from Azure Dynamics, an electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturer, while the company works on converting USPS two-ton vehicles to parallel hybrid electric — a more advanced hybrid technology.

“We’re pursuing hybrid electric technology to address fuel cost and air pollution issues,” says Engineering VP Walter O’Tormey. USPS is currently operating 30 all-electric Azure vehicles in New York.

The loaned vehicle uses a battery and a small diesel engine for power, along with regenerative braking technology to charge the battery.

Rural carriers to get right-hand-drive vehicles

DRIVE RIGHT
Rural carriers to get right-hand-drive vehicles

The USPS Board of Governors recently agreed to purchase 3,120 minivans to replace some of its right-hand-drive vehicles in urban areas. USPS has awarded a contract for the minivans to DaimlerChrysler Motors to supply the vehicles by Nov. 30, this year.

This is the second phase of a plan to provide additional postal-owned vehicles to rural carriers. In 2002, the Board approved the purchase of 6,240 minivans for city carriers, with the residual right-hand drive vehicles being transferred for rural carrier use.

The Postal Service has committed to sending 15,000 right-hand-drive vehicles — some of them already part of the urban fleet — to rural carriers by 2008.

UPS Expands Technology for Greater Inbound Visibility

ATLANTA, July 5, 2005 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) today unveiled a technology enhancement that automatically notifies customers of every package in the UPS system moving toward them, providing a new tool to better manage the demands of business.

The software technology opening a new "window" into the UPS system is called UPS Quantum ViewSM Inbound and represents the most recent addition to the UPS Quantum ViewSM suite of visibility services.

Quantum View Inbound provides proactive notification of UPS air express, ground and international packages that are en route to the receiver's location. The technology helps businesses better prepare for delivery activities in such areas as staffing, accounting, stocking and customer service.

The strength of Quantum View Inbound lies in UPS's proprietary "address matching" system that retains multiple variations of street addresses within the United States. For example, for a package destined to Atlanta, Ga., shippers might enter "55 Glenlake Parkway, NE," or possibly "55 Glenlake Pkwy" or "55 Glen Lake."

In addition to Quantum View's ability to match to different addresses, it also recognizes variations in business names such as UPS and UPS, Inc. This is a unique feature that sets the system apart from other address matching technologies. Once this information is filtered and matched to the recipient, the customer is then able to see inbound shipments to their address or another designated location.

"The ability to see what shipments are scheduled to arrive is extremely useful to businesses because it enables them to make educated decisions about workforce and inventory planning," said Jordan Colletta, UPS vice president of e-commerce marketing. "Prior to Quantum View Inbound, visibility of incoming packages had eluded transportation managers, but we're confident UPS has cracked the code with its powerful address matching system."

One company using Quantum View Inbound has already experienced significant savings. Bullock & Jones, a San Francisco retailer of fine men's clothing and sportswear for more than 150 years, has improved its catalog and online retail operations by precisely forecasting necessary staffing needs for incoming inventory based on information provided by UPS Quantum View Inbound. In fact, Bullock & Jones estimates it has reduced the time it takes to process newly arrived inventory from suppliers by approximately 15 percent.

Prior to using the service, Bullock & Jones relied on weekly and bi-weekly faxes and e-mails from suppliers to obtain the status of orders en route. This manual process was much less efficient and far less reliable than the automation provided by Quantum View Inbound. In addition to better warehouse planning, Bullock & Jones is also able to quickly determine if an order is delayed. This helps them maintain their reputation for outstanding service because they are then able to notify customers proactively that their purchase may not arrive as scheduled.

Quantum View Inbound is available in multiple file formats, including CSV, XML, TEXT, EDI and Web-based HTML. There is no charge for the service to UPS account holders. More information on UPS Quantum View Manage and an online demo is available at UPS.com/qvdemo.
