USPS: Hurricane Katrina Update #6

Hurricane Katrina Update:

At 4 p.m. CT the center of Hurricane Katrina was located about 150 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm is moving northwest at 13 mph with a forecasted gradual turn to the north within the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 165 mph. Katrina is a potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane. Hurricane force winds extend out 105 miles from the center, and tropical force winds extend out 205 miles from the center.

President Bush has declared a state of emergency for Louisiana. In New Orleans, residents have begun evacuation procedures. Storm preparations continue for Gulf Coast residents in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Louisiana District

The New Orleans Processing and Distribution Center suspended all operations at noon today. Retail and delivery services will be suspended on Monday for all offices in ZIP Codes 700, 701, 703 and 704.

Mississippi District

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for coastal areas in ZIP Code 395 in evacuation zones A & B, mostly south of Interstate 10. The following retail and delivery offices are in the affected mandatory evacuation zones and will be closed Monday: Biloxi (ZIPS 39531, 32, 33, 34), Pascagoula (ZIPS 39567, 81), Gulfport (ZIPS 39501, 07), Ocean Springs 39564, Long Beach 39560, Pass Christian 39571, Hurley 39555, Escatawpa 39552, Gautier 39553, Bay St Louis 39520, Diamondhead 39525, Kiln 39556, Pearlington 39572, Lakeshore 39558, Waveland 39576.

Drop shipments to the Gulfport Plant and any delivery and retail units in ZIP Codes 393, 394, 395 and 396 are suspended until further notice.

Alabama District

All offices in Mobile and Baldwin Counties will be closed Monday, August 29, 2005. This includes the following ZIP Codes:

36502, 36507, 36509, 36511, 36521, 36522, 36523, 36525, 36526, 36528, 36530, 36532, 36541, 36542, 36544, 36549, 36551, 36555, 36559, 36560, 36561, 36562, 36567, 36571, 36572, 36574, 36575, 36576, 36578, 36579, 36580, 36582. The following two zones in Escambia County will be closed due to proximity to the Alabama/Florida state line and previous damage received: 36426 and 36441. Mobile City Stations include zones 36608, 36609, 36695, 36619, 36693, 36605, 36615, 36602, 36603, 36606, 36607, 36617, 36610, 36611, 36612, 36618, 36613.

The Mobile Plant was operational today, processing as much volume as possible and is in good shape going into the closure tonight. The Mobile Plant will close at 12:00 midnight tonight until further notice. All drop shipments should be suspended for the Mobile Plant as of midnight tonight and suspended for Monday, August 29, 2005 for the zones listed above until notified.

All other plants and facilities will be operational tonight and Monday, August 29, 2005 unless conditions warrant a change.

At 11 a.m. ET the center of Hurricane Katrina was located about 225 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm is moving west-northwest at 12 mph with a forecasted gradual turn to the northwest within the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 175 mph. Katrina is a potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane. Hurricane force winds extend out 105 miles from the center, and tropical force winds extend out 205 miles from the center.

President Bush has declared a state of emergency for Louisiana. In New Orleans, residents have begun evacuation procedures. Storm preparations continue for Gulf Coast residents in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for coastal areas in ZIP Code 395, mostly south of Interstate 10.

Drop shipments to the Gulfport Plant and any delivery and retail units in ZIP Codes 393, 394, 395 and 396 are suspended until further notice.

South Florida District

All mail processing plants resumed operations and drop shipments Friday at 3 p.m.

Retail units in ZIP Codes 330, 331 and 332 are operational, but many sites are still without power. Generators have been deployed to those sites, but retail services will be limited.

Hurricane Katrina Update:

Hurricane Katrina has shown sustained winds of 160 mph, making it a category 5 storm. At 7 a.m. ET, the storm was around 250 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The hurricane center warned it could come ashore early Monday morning with a storm surge of up to 25 feet and douse the Gulf Coast with up to 15 inches of rain in some areas.

President Bush has declared a state of emergency for Louisiana. In New Orleans, residents have begun evacuation procedures. Storm preparations continue for Gulf Coast residents in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

South Florida District
All mail processing plants resumed operations and drop shipments Friday at 3 p.m.

All retail units in ZIP Codes 330, 331 and 332 normally open Saturdays are operational, but many sites are still without power. Generators have been deployed to those sites, but retail services will be limited.

Mail delivery is underway throughout the South Florida District.

All other Districts are fully operational at this time.
