KATRINA AND THE WAVES

Storm slams Gulf Coast, 28-foot surge waves expected

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast this morning, dropping more than 8 inches of rain in the first four hours and causing flooding in many areas. A category 4 storm, its 145 mph winds have been ripping the roofs off buildings and homes and causing power outages as it continues its destructive track from Louisiana into Mississippi and Alabama.

Flooding, winds and evacuations have affected processing, delivery and retail service in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and in Florida’s Pensacola area. Customers needing the latest service information should check the Hurricane Update page on usps.com. This information is also available on RIBBS and the National and Premier Accounts webpage on usps.com.

While New Orleans was spared a forecasted direct hit, Biloxi, MS, is taking that direct hit and Mobile, AL, is reporting severe damage as well. Storm surges as high as 28-feet are expected to accompany this hurricane, making it one of the most dangerous storms to hit land in years.
